STATUS OF PUNJAB’S FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY - PUNJAB
Food processing sector is the focus area of investment in Punjab. The state government operates an agricultural mega project policy to facilitate investment in the food and agro processing sector. In line with the thinking of the Government of India, the state government has formed a separate department of Food Processing Industries to look after the schemes of National Mission on Food Processing, launched by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Government of India for the 12th Five Year Plan.
AGRO FOOD PARKS
Agro Food parks are being developed in the state to enable small and medium scale units to attain viability by defraying cost of major facilities such as R&Dlab, cold storage, ware-housing facilities, pack-houses etc. At present, Food Park project at Sirhind, Distt. Fatehgarh Sahib at a cost of Rs. 15 crore is being implemented by PAGREXCO (Punjab Agro Export Corporation).
MEGA FOOD PARKS (UNDER MEGA FOOD PARKS SCHEME)
Three Mega Food Parks have been approved by MoFPIin the state, which is being implemented by International Mega Food Park Limited (project SPV) at village Dhabwala Kalan, Dist Fazilka.
COLD CHAIN PROJECTS BEING IMPLEMENTED UNDER MOFPI ASSISTANCE
Under the Scheme for Cold Chain, Value Addition and Preservation Infrastructure, MoFPIhas approved 12 cold chain projects in the state. Out of these approved projects, the projects at Ropar, Sangrur and Kapurthala have already been completed and started commercial operations.
